Flexible Video Bronchoscope is a very important diagnostic and treatment tool used on a regular basis in respiratory medicine. It is a very flexible, thin, and long medical device with a light and a camera at the distal end, allowing physicians to visually see the airways, lung, and trachea in real time directly. Because the device can rotate 360 degrees, it offers complete visualization of the respiratory tract, and hence it is an inescapable device for pulmonologists and thoracic physicians.

Structure and Design
Flexible Video Bronchoscope has been designed with recent technological advancements that make it more useful in addition to being functional. It is usually of 60 to 65 centimeter length, which gives it adequate reach to access the whole bronchial tree. The device is built from several glass fiber bundles that pass high-quality images as well as light to an outside monitor. The outer sheath is constructed of medical-grade material such as PVC or hollow vinyl, which is tough but flexible without risking the patient.
The bronchoscope handle is ergonomic and easy to grip, with controls to maneuver the tip and zoom. The most impressive feature of the device is the USB cable included, and how easily the device then becomes compatible with monitors, laptops, tablets, and even Android phones. This renders the Flexible Video Bronchoscope extremely portable and a perfect option in many clinical environments, including outpatient clinics and emergency rooms.
Camera and Lighting
At the distal end of the Flexible Video Bronchoscope is a high-definition video camera. The camera is used to take real-time images and videos of the patient’s airway and project them onto a monitor mounted on it, allowing the physician to make effective diagnoses. The camera is further aided by two in-built LED light sources that light up the inner structures, rendering external light sources unnecessary. This combined lighting system provides clear and precise visualization even in the inner regions of the lungs.

Main Features of Flexible Video Bronchoscope
Flexibility and Maneuverability: As its name suggests, the Flexible Video Bronchoscope is very flexible. Its capacity to flex and turn 360 degrees enables physicians to make turns within the twists of the anatomy of the respiratory tract. This flexibility is necessary to reach the small and delicate lung branches.
Real-Time Imaging: The high resolution camera and LED illumination enable real-time imaging of the airways, which is critical for instant diagnosis and treatment planning. This feature proves to be particularly useful in emergency cases or during critical surgery.
USB Connectivity: The use of a USB cable ensures compatibility with a variety of digital devices, making it easy to share data and conduct remote consultations.
The Flexible Video Bronchoscope possesses some key advantages that make it an immediate replacement for rigid bronchoscopes:
- Accurate Diagnosis: It provides direct visualisation of the airways, and hence infection, tumor, and structural disease are easily identifiable which are invisible to X-rays and CT scans.
- Least Invasive: The procedure is more tolerable and does not involve large cuts or general anaesthesia.
- Multiple Indications: Not just diagnostic but therapeutic use too, like in evacuation of a foreign body, biopsy, or loco-regional therapy. Tracheomalacia and Excessive Dynamic Airway Collapse (EDAC) can be diagnosed in appropriate manner with this device’s help.
Preparation and Procedure
Patients are advised to fast for about 7-8 hours prior to undergoing a bronchoscopy using the Flexible Video Bronchoscope. Telling the doctor about any medication consumed is also necessary since it will be regulated or discontinued prior to procedure. Local anesthesia is used to numb the throat and to relieve pain.
The bronchoscope is passed slowly into the nose or mouth and directed downward into the lungs and trachea. It’s usually safe but occasionally makes patients uncomfortable or like they want to cough, though. The ECG and oxygen saturation are monitored during its performance.
The whole process takes about 30 to 60 minutes, but the whole procedure including recovery and preparation will be 4 hours. No food or liquids are allowed after the procedure until the numbness of the throat wears off. Alcohol should not be consumed for at least 24 hours.
Types of Flexible Video Bronchoscopes
There are two primary types of Flexible Video Bronchoscopes:
Single-Use Bronchoscopes: They are reusable only once and are disposed of after every procedure. They are more costly per procedure but minimize the risk of cross-contamination or infection. Single-use bronchoscopes are extremely convenient in emergency cases and don’t need cleaning or sterilization.
Reusable Bronchoscopes: They can be sterilized and reused several times. They provide better quality pictures and are less expensive in the long term. But they should be cleaned and disinfected properly after use to prevent patient-to-patient transmission of infection.
